Gundam Watch Order: Including Series and Movies (2024)

Gundam is a Japanese media franchise that began in 1979 and is one of the oldest active media franchises from Japan. The franchise began on April 7, 1979 with Mobile Suit Gundam, a TV series that defined the “real robot” mecha anime genre by featuring giant robots called mobile suits in a militaristic setting. The franchise was created by Yoshiyuki Tomino and Hajime Yatate, also known as the creator of Cowboy Bebop.

Although the franchise is present in numerous artistic fields, the anime is what concerns us today, as we are going to bring you the ultimate watching order for the complete Gundam anime series, including the series (regular anime series, OVA, and ONA episodes) and the movies. The guide will contain all of the material, listed in the proper chronological order.

How many Gundam episodes are there?

If our numbers are correct, as of November 2021, there is a total of 1,052 Gundam episodes. This includes the actual anime series, specials, shorts, OVA episodes and series, ONA episodes and series, and some OVA compilations. The number of episodes for the upcoming 2022 anime series is still unknown, so we haven’t included it in our calculation.

Seeing how Gundam series is one of the best anime and had a lot of compilations over the years, it is difficult to determine the exact number of episodes, so keep in mind that the number might not be fully correct but we’re definitely not far off.

How many Gundam movies are there?

As of 2021, and including the scheduled 2022 releases, there are a total of 35 Gundam movies (excluding the one live-action one from 2000), most of which are compilation movies, though, that simply sums up some of the series in a shorter format. There are, of course, several original movies but out of the 35 movies, the majority are simply compilation movies that you can, for the most part, skip if you’ve seen the anime series.

It is very difficult to follow the complete narrative with a guide, which is why we have decided to bring you, firstly, a list of the material, and then that same list in chronological order. The latter will include fewer titles than the first list simply because the material on the first list will also contain compilations that we won’t be listing later. Here is the first list:

Do you need to watch Gundam in order?

Well, Gundam is a pretty large franchise and the release dates of specific episodes and movies don’t necessarily follow the chronology of the universe. Now, this is a major issue if you want to connect all the dots, which is why we highly recommend that you follow our chronological guide from this article, as it will help you understand the whole franchise much better.

Will there be more Gundam anime?

There is absolutely no doubt that there will be further Gundam episodes and/or movies. We already had a short series in 2021, and we have two upcoming projects planned for a 2022 release. Seeing how Gundam has survived for – now – almost half a century, we’re certain that more material is on the way.
