It's hard to overstate the impact Gundam has had not just on anime but on pop culture worldwide. As the single most prolific mecha anime franchise, Gundam is responsible for cementing giant robots in the collective human subconscious. Thanks in no small part to relentless merchandising, Gundam has successfully made space opera mainstream in Japan in the same way Star Wars has in the West.

A franchise this prolific is bound to have its share of hits and misses, but the sheer number of adaptations belonging to the Gundam canon is a feat in itself. Though it can be tough for newcomers, especially to organize each Gundam series in order, this long legacy goes to show the long-lasting impact the Gundam franchise has had. Likewise, it helps to build anticipation for the many new Gundam anime on the way.

Since the release of the original 1979 series, it's gone on to spawn numerous entries in anime, manga and other forms. Now, the property is going into its 45th anniversary, and with several new projects on the way, it makes sense to look back at each one beforehand to see how they relate to each other.

1 1970–1989 Series

Mobile Suit Gundam

The first Gundam anime aired on Nagoya Broadcasting Network starting in 1979. The original Mobile Suit Gundam introduces the concept of Mobile Suits through a war between the Earth Federation and the Principality of Zeon. The Earth Federation's experimental RX-78 Gundam could prove to be the decisive factor in this war.

Mobile Suit Gundam spanned just 43 episodes and received rather low ratings. However, Bandai's toy merchandising success helped boost the franchise's popularity and laid the groundwork for the vast Gundam canon to come. The original Gundam, often referred to as Gundam 0079, remains a great place to start for any prospective new Gundam fans. It shows its age, but it also holds up very well for modern audiences.

Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam

Gundam's newfound popularity led to a sequel series in Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam five years later. Considered among the best Gundam adaptations of all time, Zeta Gundam vastly improved upon the original series, focusing on darker themes and tossing higher stakes into the mix.

Zeta Gundam handles the aftermath of the "One Year War" that takes place in Mobile Suit Gundam and later Gundam series. Several years after the One Year War, teenager Kamille Bidan finds himself in the middle of a conflict between his Anti-Earth Union Group (AEUG) and a corrupt faction known as the Titans.

Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ

Featuring an all-new cast of characters, Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ (pronounced as "Double Zeta") included more comedic elements than prior installments. This was done in contrast to the darker tone of the "kill 'em all" mentality present in other entries by franchise creator Yoshiyuki Tomino. Not all fans embraced this tonal shift, and the series remains divisive but memorable.

Gundam ZZ follows the events of Zeta Gundam and is again centered around the AEUG. In the story, Captain Bright Noa must fend off Neo Zeon by recruiting Judau Ashta and his team of junk collectors. This culminated in a movie that paid off the events of all the preceding Gundam anime.

Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack

Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack is the first Gundam movie that wasn't a compilation film. Char's Counterattack even incorporated CGI, albeit very briefly, showcasing another historical aspect to its story. Said CGI section amounted to only five seconds of screen time of the Sweetwater colony in space.

Char's Counterattack served as a culmination of the stories of Amuro Ray and his long-time rival, Char Aznable, which had been a key plot point throughout all the major Gundam series up to that point. Featuring the two in their most powerful Gundam suits yet, the movie delivered one last climactic showdown before the series moved on to new protagonists.

Mobile Suit SD Gundam

Mobile Suit SD Gundam is a series of theatrical shorts and OVAs that were initially parodies of the Gundam franchise, reenacting past events such as the One-Year War, in a lighter tone with exaggerated character designs. As SD Gundam progressed, it incorporated a cast of characters based on Gachapon capsule toys and other Gundam products.

While the original SD Gundam is barely recognized outside Japan, it's created plenty of spin-offs in anime and gaming that are well-known worldwide. Likewise, the super deformed Gundam model kits that the series was based on have become some of the most popular toys in the franchise.

Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket

The first true OVA in the Gundam franchise, Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket, received critical acclaim for its decidedly introspective tone throughout its six-episode run. Though seemingly short, it packed a lot of story and depth into its run. It also began the trend of expanding the Universal Century timeline through OVAs and other Gundam anime spinoffs.

Rather than chronicling the exploits of pilots, War in the Pocket focuses on the wartime experiences of an eleven-year-old child during the One-Year War. Alfred Izuruha and his bond with Zeon pilot Bernie Wiseman presents a refreshing perspective on an established event.

2 1990-1999 Series

Mobile Suit Gundam F91

Mobile Suit Gundam F91 is the second Gundam theatrical release and faced numerous struggles during its production. Originally set to be a Gundam reboot that was meant to spawn numerous sequels, controversies got in the way. The biggest controversy surrounds the bizarre choice to alter the size of the onscreen Gundams for the sake of easier toy manufacturing and marketing.

Gundam F91 takes place 30 years after the events of Char's Counterattack. Gundam F91 centers around Seabook Arno and his girlfriend, Cecily Fairchild, as they attempt to overcome the Crossbone Vanguard, which is led by Cecily's grandfather, Meitzer Ronah. It was later succeeded by the manga series, Mobile Suit Crossbone Gundam.

Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory

Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory is the second Gundam OVA and spans 13 episodes. It went on to receive a compilation movie and a manga, with the original series even airing on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim. Stardust Memory is set just three years after the events of the One-Year War.

A test pilot named Kou Uraki helps on a mission to recover the stolen Gundam prototype Gundam GP02A "Physalis." GP02A was stolen by the Delaz Fleet, a group of remnant Zeon members, pursuing their goal called "Operation Stardust." Kou gets into multiple battles against the experienced Zeon soldier Anavel Gato, learning more about himself as a soldier, and as a man.

Mobile Suit Victory Gundam (1993-1994)

Mobile Suit Victory Gundam also takes place in the Universal Century timeline and acts as a successor to Gundam F91. It was the first Gundam anime released in Japan's Heisei era, and also the final full-length Gundam series in said Universal Century timeline. Sadly, it's been somewhat forgotten by fans, namely due to its fairly middling nature.

Victory Gundam focused on the conflict between an armed group known as BESPA and a band of rebels known as the League Militaire. In a bid to attract younger fans, Üso Ewin and his close friend Shahkti Kareen are younger than any prior Gundam protagonists, at just 13 years old.

Mobile Fighter G Gundam

Considered the fifth official Gundam installment, Mobile Fighter G Gundam centers on an intergalactic tournament that space colonies use as a stand-in for engaging in war. The series is not set in the Universal Century timeline but instead a part of the Future Century timeline unique to Mobile Fighter. It also heavily changed how the action and general politics were handled, having more in common with a Super Robot anime than the typical Gundam series.

This shift in the story's tone initially created some dissension among fans, especially because Mobile Fighter G Gundam felt less serious and decidedly more shonen. With all the over the top battles, it was able to quickly find an audience in new fans and classic Gundam fans.

New Mobile Report Gundam Wing

In something of a return to basics following the subversive G Gundam, Mobile Suit Gundam Wing focused on an intergalactic war set in the After Colony timeline. Heero Yuy and four other Mobile Suit pilots are initially wary of each other, believing each is a part of the tyrannical Oz. The five pilots realize that they share the same goal of overthrowing Oz and team up to destroy the military organization.

Gundam Wing helped popularize the Gundam franchise in the United States, thanks in no small part to its time slot on Toonami. The tone was both unique to the series and also reminiscent of the franchise's roots, while the show's male characters played a part in attracting a new female audience. It's still considered by many to be one of the best Gundam anime, namely because it was the first introduction to the franchise for many Westerners.

Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team

Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team is an OVA that consists of 12 episodes, as well as a compilation movie, Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team – Miller's Report. The 08th MS Team begins just a month after the first Gundam series. Depicting the experiences of an Earth Federation ground unit that engages in guerrilla warfare in Southeast Asia during the One Year War, it's an even more grounded take on the mecha genre.

In it, the soldiers fight tooth and nail for mere miles of territory in their mass-produced Gundam units. It's a gritty struggle for survival that makes every move count on the battlefield. Thus, it, more than any other Gundam anime, exemplifies the harsh nature of the Real Robot genre.

After War Gundam X

After War Gundam X takes place in the After Wars alternate timeline on a post-apocalyptic version of Earth 15 years after the 7th Space War. Mobile Suits left over from the war are now in the hands of the remaining survivors. Jamil Neate seeks to keep them from being used to cause more violence.

Despite a likable cast, After War Gundam X was hampered by slow pacing and staying on planet Earth, leading to an early cancelation. The plot was condensed into the final few episodes so as not to leave fans with an abrupt ending. For this reason, it's not the most mainstream Gundam anime and has mostly been ignored in the franchise.

Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz

Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz is the sequel to Mobile Suit: Gundam Wing and was initially released as an OVA series. It was later cropped into a compilation film. Endless Waltz expands on the background of Heero Yuy and the other four pilots of Gundam Wing. Endless Waltz also fully explains what the purpose of "Operation Meteor" really was.

Like its predecessor, Endless Waltz proved popular in the US, and its initial debut on Cartoon Network brought in some of the channel's best-ever ratings at the time. Sadly for fans, it was the last time that the After Colony timeline was seen, as the subsequent Gundam anime all went in new directions afterward. Nevertheless, it remains a highpoint of the franchise that's also seen as retroactively improving the already beloved show.

Turn A Gundam

Directed by Gundam creator Yoshiyuki Tomino himself, Turn A Gundam, or ∀ Gundam, takes place in a different era than previous Gundam works. Turn A Gundam is notable for being the last Gundam anime to be painted on cels as digital coloring began with 2002's Mobile Suit Gundam SEED.

In Turn A Gundam, the Moon-dwelling human race known as the Moonrace is much more advanced than humanity on Earth. However, the Moonrace longs to return home to Earth after thousands of years away. They send three teenagers to gauge Earth's viability. The continuity of Turn A Gundam is a sort of catch-all, as versions of all the previous Gundam anime are canon with its timeline.

3 2000–2009 Series

G-Saviour

Produced by a Canadian Studio, G-Saviour was Gundam's first live-action made-for-TV adaptation. G-Saviour is set in the main Universal Century timeline, focusing on space colonies trying to stay afloat amid numerous social and economic crises after the fall of the Earth Federation. Fairly experimental, the Gundam project's clunky nature and non-Japanese origins proved to be controversial.

G-Saviour is understandably loathed by fans due to its poor writing and failure to capitalize on the best elements of the Gundam series. Gundammight not work in live-action, so this film might have been in trouble from the start. Since its original release, there's yet to be another entry in the franchise like it, with other Western attempts to adapt Gundam falling through.

Gundam Neo Experience 0087: Green Divers

Gundam Neo Experience 0087: Green Divers is a short CGI film, clocking in at 24 minutes, set during the Gryps War. Green Divers tells the story of two siblings, Asagi and Takuya, who find themselves caught in the middle of a battle between the Titans and AEUG on their way to Earth. Asagi and Takuya are helped by a Zeta Gundam who, unbeknownst to them, is piloted by Amuro Ray.

Once again, the Gundam series returned to the Universal Century timeline. This has since remained the norm for the franchise, with most side projects of this nature being set in that continuity. As a mere short film, Green Divers is one of the more overlooked Gundam anime.

Gundam Evolve

Gundam Evolve was a series of 15 short films set across a variety of Gundam timelines, starting with the Universal Century timeline. Though it was initially only going to be five episodes long, Bandai released two more volumes of five episodes each. This resulted in one of the more experimental Gundam anime.

Gundam Evolve utilized a mix of different visual styles to showcase Mobile Suits in a high-quality CGI rendering. Those visual styles included traditional animation, 3D rendering, and cel-shaded animation. Released over six years, it was also a fairly long-lived project.

Mobile Suit Gundam SEED

Mobile Suit Gundam SEED is the first Gundam series set in the Cosmic Era timeline. Gundam SEED tells the story of Kira Yamato, who is living peacefully in the colony of Heliopolis, which secretly houses the development of Mobile Suits. The discovery of those Mobile Suits leads Kira's home to be the site of an intense battle in an ongoing war.

Gundam SEED was more accessible to casual viewers than many prior adaptations. It also featured much better animation, likable romance elements, and a J-Pop soundtrack. All of this led to Gundam SEED achieving widespread success and even acclaim in Japan.

Superior Defender Gundam Force

Superior Defender Gundam Force is a completely computer-animated series that marked the 25th anniversary of the Gundam franchise. Humans and robots coexist peacefully in Super Defender Gundam Force. However, that peace is tested when the Dark Axis attacks their home of Neotopia. This scope separated it quite a bit from the other SD Gundam anime.

Superior Defender Gundam Force did not fare well with Japanese audiences and received low ratings during its second season. It didn't do much better in North America, as the final 26 episodes were initially unaired, failing to become a huge success on Toonami. Fan petitions ultimately led to the release of those episodes in 2008, however, showing that some portion of the fanbase took a liking to the unique show.

Mobile Suit Gundam MS IGLOO: The Hidden One Year War

Mobile Suit Gundam MS IGLOO: The Hidden One Year War is yet another entry in the Gundam series set during the One Year War, taking place during the early stages of the war. It was also the first entry in the MS IGLOO project, with these Gundam anime showing different

The Hidden One Year War focused on a team of researchers working in weapons development aboard a Zeon ship Jotunheim, which was formally a civilian cargo ship. The Hidden One Year War makes the most of its three episodes by depicting events such as Operation British, the Battle of Loum, and Operation Odessa.

Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny

The direct sequel to Gundam SEED, Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny had big shoes to fill. The Gundam anime was set two years after Gundam SEED and focuses on a new protagonist, Shinn Asuka, after the treaty between the Zodiac Alliance of Freedom Treaty (ZAFT) and the Earth Alliance is broken.

Gundam SEED Destiny would become a huge success, although falling short of its prequel. The ending saw criticism to the point that an OVA was developed to improve it. Despite its more negative reception, the Cosmic Era timeline was able to live on with various manga and new Gundam anime projects.

Mobile Suit Gundam MS IGLOO: Apocalypse 0079

Mobile Suit Gundam MS IGLOO: Apocalypse 0079 is the second MS IGLOO OVA series, once again consisting of three episodes. Apocalypse 0079 was developed after the strong success of The Hidden One Year War. As the name suggests, it once again ties into the events of the original Gundam anime.

Apocalypse 0079 is a continuation of the story presented in the MS IGLOO OVA and is set once again on the cargo ship Jotunheim during the One Year War. Oliver May and his crew are testing a series of weapons on behalf of Zeon to see which ones are viable for mass production and war.

Mobile Suit Gundam SEED C.E. 73: STARGAZER

It's not surprising that a series as successful as Gundam SEED would inspire a side story or two. Mobile Suit Gundam SEED C.E. 73: STARGAZER is the first of those Gundam anime side stories, with the plot based around Gundam SEED Destiny in particular. STARGAZER consists of only three episodes, and it features a completely new cast of characters.

STARGAZER is set just after the "Break the World" incident and tells the story of a research coordinator, Selene McGriff, and a pilot, Sven Cal Bayang, locked in a battle over the Mobile Suit built for space exploration, which both later find themselves trapped in. While their fate is initially left unknown, a manga was released that explored what happened after the events of STARGAZER.

Mobile Suit Gundam 00

Mobile Suit Gundam 00 is one of the best gateway series for newcomers. 00's two-season, 50-episode run was the first Gundam series to be produced in both widescreen and high-definition. The seasonal format was also new to the franchise, and its English Ocean dub also saw praise. Many fans also considered it a spirirtual remake of Gundam Wing, in many respects.

Mobile Suit Gundam 00 is set on Earth at a time when fossil fuels are running out. Three warring factions vie for control of the solar energy system. All the while, an organization known as the Celestial Being desires the complete end of war by engaging in the war itself, which leads to greater issues. This Gundam anime featured themes that were particularly prescient in a post-9/11 world.

Mobile Suit Gundam MS IGLOO 2: Gravity Front

Mobile Suit Gundam MS IGLOO 2: Gravity Front is produced thanks to the continued success of the other MS IGLOO entries. Like the other MS IGLOO OVAs, Gravity Front consists of three episodes.

Unlike previous MS IGLOO OVAs, Gravity Front adopted the Earth Federation's point of view during the early stages of the One Year War. The Earth Federation is fighting to take back lost territory and also includes events such as Operation British and Operation Odessa. This altered perspective helped to give more nuance to the Gundam franchise.

4 2010–2019 Series

Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn

Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn is an OVA series based on a successful novel by Harutoshi Fukui. Gundam Unicorn consists of seven episodes. Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn initially begins with the early days of human space colonization in Universal Century 0001 and establishes the Laplace terror attack.

The rest of Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn takes place in Universal Century 0096 and tells the story of Banagher Links, a colonist boy who finds himself caught in the midst of a new conflict that relates to the Laplace terror attack. It began a trend of the many Gundam novels being turned into anime.

SD Gundam Sangokuden Brave Battle Warriors

SD Gundam Sangokuden Brave Battle Warriors was produced in conjunction with the production of the BB Sensei Sangokuden model kits. SD Gundam Sangokuden features a story loosely inspired by the seminal classic Chinese novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms. This homages how classic SD Gundam releases and model kits were based on different time periods.

In the story of the Gundam anime, the Three Sovereigns once descended upon Mirisha, establishing the sun, the moon, and the sea. Legend also has it that Mirisha will descend into darkness, allowing Gundams to wield the souls of the Three Sovereigns. Brave Battle Warriors has a more fantastical and almost cosmic storyline, remniscent of xinxia Chinese stories.

Mobile Suit Gundam 00 The Movie: A Wakening Of The Trailblazer

Mobile Suit Gundam 00 the Movie: A Wakening of the Trailblazer is set two years after Gundam 00 and acts as a finale to the series. A Wakening of the Trailblazer focuses on the Celestial Beings in conflict with an alien group known as the ELS.

00 the Movie is the first Gundam series where aliens are the antagonists. This was a particularly controversial plot point, and in the eyes of some fans, it ruined the story. While the film features quality animation and thrilling action setpieces, many fans were disappointed by the lack of attention given to the main cast.

Mobile Suit Gunpla Builders Beginning G

The Mobile Suit Gunpla Builders Beginning G OVA marked the 30th anniversary of the release of the RX-78-2 Gundam model kit. Thus, it made perfect sense for the Gundam anime to focus on Gunpla model kits. This began a subseries based around that very concept.

Builders Beginning G tells the story of Haru Irei, who builds a Gunpla model after being inspired by a 1/1 replica of RX-78-2 Gundam. Haru Irei then uses his Gunpla model to battle other builders in a virtual world to reach the rank of "Gunpla Meister."

Mobile Suit Gundam AGE (2011–2012)

Mobile Suit Gundam AGE is the 12th official Gundam anime series and is set during the Advanced Generation timeline. Gundam AGE is set throughout the One Hundred Years War, which began after Earth was suddenly attacked by an unknown enemy after a long period of peace. The series focuses on Flit Asuno, who received the AGE Device from his dying mother, who was killed in this attack.

Flit and his later descendants attempt to utilize the AGE Device to develop a Mobile Suit that could change the tide of war. Focusing on the different time periods gave the Gundam series a unique scope and structure. Despite this, Gundam AGE proved to be somewhat disliked among the fanbase, especially given its younger target audience.

Gundam Build Fighters

Like Builders Beginning G, Gundam Build Fighters envisions a world where model kits and science-fiction collide. Gunpla builders use virtual reality once again to engage in holographic battles against other builders and their models. Gundam Build Fighters is not set in the same universe as Builders Beginning G, however, making the Gundam anime series completely separate.

In Gundam Build Fighters, Sei Iori is the child of a family who owns a model shop. He dreams of becoming a world-champion Gunpla fighter. However, his piloting skills leave a lot to be desired. Sei befriends Reiji, whose piloting skills are far advanced for his age. Together, Sei and Reiji balance out their strengths and weaknesses to pursue the Gunpla Battle World Championship.

Mobile Suit Gundam-San

Mobile Suit Gundam-San was a gag-comedy that ran for 13 episodes of roughly three minutes each. The comedic series featured a fun and expressive art style and familiar characters such as Amuro Ray and Char Aznable. Gundam-San was designed to be a direct parody of the original Gundam series, covering notable moments and characters in a hilarious fashion.

Due to this satirical nature, it's best enjoyed by those who've also seen the previous Gundam anime. Sadly, it's quite hard to come by, making it a somewhat obscure inside joke.

Gundam Reconguista in G

Gundam Reconguista in G marked the 35th anniversary of the Gundam franchise and was the first written by Yoshiyuki Tomino since 1999. The series shared a character designer with Eureka Seven and attempted to subvert story expectations (to mixed results). Nevertheless, it was the true follow-up to the most beloved Gundam timeline.

Gundam Reconguista in G is set in the Regild Century, which takes place after the Universal Century. Bellri Zenam is a Capital Guard pilot-in-training who is able to control the YG-111 Gundam G-Self to pilot it, despite only a few being capable of doing so. Bellri and G-Self's journey, and the truth behind Bellri's unknown past, will forever chart the course of the Regild Century.

Gundam Build Fighters Try

Gundam Build Fighters Try is the sequel to Gundam Build Fighters. Gundam Build Fighters Try is once again set on a version of Earth where Gunpla builders battle in a virtual realm. The series is set seven years after the conclusion of Gundam Build Fighters, with the model kit-building sport seeking a new champion.

Gunpla battling has become increasingly more popular thanks to new management under Yajima Trading, who established a fresh slate of new rules and battle modes. However, Fumina Hoshino is the only student at his middle school who cares for Gunpla. Fumina seeks to find two other enthusiasts, so they can enter a Gunpla tournament.

Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin

Mobile Suit: Gundam: The Origin is an OVA that was later compiled into a 13-episode Gundam anime. The Origin served as a retelling of the original Gundam anime and focused on Casval Rem Deikun and Artesia Som Deikun after their Side 3 escape. Casval of course went on to become the iconic villain Char Anzable.

The Origin chronicles the death of Zeon Zum Deikun and the subsequent transformation of the Autonomous Republic of Munzo into the Principality of Zeon. The Origin also includes a look into the development of the first Mobile Suits as well as explores the White Base crew. This is easily one of the best prequel anime ever made, as it makes Char an even more complex character.

Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans

Set on a terraformed Mars, Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans added fresh grit and a distinct degree of darkness to the Gundam franchise. It takes place in a new and unique timeline, so it is free to play with established Gundam tropes in a totally fresh way. It is one of the best modern jumping-on points for new viewers who don't want to jump all the way back to the 70s. Likewise, the beloved series is now finally getting a follow-up anime.

The cast of Iron-Blooded Orphans consists of child soldiers who rebel against an abusive, Earth-dependent establishment and form their own group and fight for independence. This successful reboot of the Gundam series was written by acclaimed writer Mari Okada. IBO eschews the traditional beam and laser weapons in favor of cold, hard steel and bullets, giving the world an almost medieval feel but with legendary mobile suits in place of knights in shining armor.

Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt (2015–2017)

Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt is an ONA that sticks with the tried and true One Year War. Like many other recent projects set in the Universal Century timeline, it was based on a manga, with the source material written by Yasuo Ohtagaki. The first season of four episodes is set during the One Year War, while the second season of the Gundam anime is set eight months after the conclusion of that war.

Thunderbolt centers around Io Flemming, a rebellious lover of jazz who is an ace pilot for the Earth Federation. After a successful mission, Io is given the keys to the FA-78 Full Armor Gundam prototype. It's notably a bit darker than most other Gundam anime, showcasing the grittiest aspects of the war.

Mobile Suit Gundam: Twilight AXIS

Mobile Suit Gundam: Twilight AXIS is an ONA series based on a light novel written by Kōjirō Nakamura. Twilight AXIS was loosely inspired by the famed 19th-century Richard Wagner romance opera Tristan and Isolde. It's also one of the few entries in the series to have a female protagonist.

Twilight AXIS' six-episode run showcases the Mastema special forces led by Lieutenant JG Mehmet Merca. Mastema was established by the Earth Federation to investigate the shattered asteroid called Axis, which orbits the Earth.

Gundam Build Fighters: Battlogue (2017)

Gundam Build Fighters: Battlogue is an OVA series that pits the franchise's greatest mechs against each other. Battlogue features a variety of "dream" Gunpla battle scenarios. These battles bring back A.I. versions of classic characters, like Amuro Ray and classic Mobile Suits. Though the series was fairly short, it was the ultimate in Gundam anime fanservice.

Gundam Build Fighters: GM's Counterattack (2017)

Gundam Build Fighters: GM's Counterattack is yet another ONA sequel to Gundam Build Fighters. Comprised of a single episode, GM's Counterattack brings audiences back to the story of Sei Iori, the protagonist of the first Gundam Build Fighters series. The title is also a humorous homage to Char's Counterattack.

GM's Counterattack is set just before Sei Iori graduates from the Seiho Academy. Sei is joined by Meijin Kawaguchi and others as they experience the newly completed Yajima Stadium. However, an unknown force takes over the stadium and challenges Sei and company to a Gunpla battle.

Gundam Build Divers

Gundam Build Divers is an evolution of Gundam Build Fighters and falls in line with the overwhelmingly popular Isekai genre. This is showcased by its cast of characters being transported into a new and unique world. In Gundam Build Divers, characters can choose to virtually live in a Gundam-rife reality known as the Gundam Battle Nexus Online (GBNO).

Riku Mikami and Yukio Hidaka, middle school students, bring along their classmate Momoka Yashiro to explore this virtual world. Build Divers succeeded due to these isekai anime elements, making it analogous to franchises such as Sword Art Online. It was also directed by Shinya Watada, who worked on Gundam Build Fighters Try.

Mobile Suit Gundam Narrative

Mobile Suit Gundam Narrative was the first feature-length Gundam theatrical film in eight years. It is based on the Gundam Unicorn novel Mobile Suit Gundam UC: Phoenix Hunting. Thus, it continued the trend of almost the franchise's movies being set in the Universal Century timeline.

Gundam Narrative is set a year after the OVA Gundam Unicorn, which saw the opening of the Laplace Box and the sealing of the RX-0 Unicorn Gundam and RX-0 Unicorn Gundam 02 Banshee Mobile Suits. However, the previously missing RX-0 Unicorn Gundam 03 has reemerged after two years, leading the Earth Federation to pursue it.

SD Gundam World Sangoku Soketsuden

SD Gundam World Sangoku Soketsuden is an ONA that served as a follow-up to Sangokuden Brave Battle Warriors. There are no narrative ties between the two SD Gundam series, but Sangoku Soketsuden is still loosely based on Romance of the Three Kingdoms. It was released as a part of Gundam's 40-year anniversary, namely showcasing the legacy of the super deformed variants.

Sangoku Soketsuden deals with the aftermath of the Etiolation Trinity epidemic, where citizens of different cities have isolated and fortified themselves from potential outside infections. Each city relies on Trinity energy, leading to plenty of conflicts.

Gundam Build Divers: Re:RISE

Gundam Build Divers: Re:RISE is the ONA sequel to Gundam Build Divers, which also marked the 40th anniversary of the Gundam franchise. Re:RISE is set two years after Gundam Build Divers. A new GBNO game has been released. Hiroto, Kazami, May, and Parviz are all solo players who later band together and form a party both in the GBNO and outside of it.

Re:RISE continued its predecessor's success, carrying the torch of borderline isekai Gunpla-based Gundam anime. It also had numerous spinoffs, namely a manga that continued the story of the show.

Gundam Build Divers: Battlogue

Gundam Build Divers: Battlogue is a ten-minute ONA that was released in conjunction with Gundam Build Divers: Re:RISE. This iteration of Battlogue has still yet to be dubbed in English. There was an attempt to make a Western comic book continuation, but this fell through.

Divers: Battlogue features battles between Build Divers and Re:RISE characters that were based on fan voting. Divers: Battlogue also sports a Mobile Suit from Gundam Narrative, the first appearance from the film in the Gundam Build series.

SD Gundam World Heroes

SD Gundam World Heroes is the latest series based on the SD Gundam model kits and serves as the sequel to Sangoku Soketsuden. SD Gundam World Heroes is loosely based on the classic tale Journey to the West while also incorporating other narrative elements, including, once again, Romance of the Three Kingdoms.

In SD Gundam World Heroes, Wukong Impulse Gundam awakens at the site of a meteor crash. Wukong joins forces with Zhuge Liang Freedom Gundam, and Liu Bei to save the world from imminent doom. As with previous Gundam anime of this sort, it reimagined classic mobile suits through a feudal Japanese/Chinese filter.

Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway

Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway is a three-part film adaptation based on a series of decades-old spin-off novels by author Yoshiyuki Tomino, Gundam's original creator. Hathaway takes place 12 years after Char's Counterattack. Still recovering from Char's rebellion, the Earth Federation has increased the Earth's pollution while exiling humans from Earth.

Hathaway Noa, the son of Bright Noa, leads a terrorist organization called "Mafty," but a fateful meeting with Gigi Andalucia and Federation Forces officer Kenneth Sleg changes everything. The movie is just the first part in a planned Hathaway anime trilogy, though the next two entries have taken quite a while to release.

Gundam Build Real

Gundam Build Real is a live-action web series consisting of six episodes. This unique Gundam anime follows the traditional Gundam Build model while combining Gunpla models with VR. The conept took model-building to a new level and stood out from any other Gundam series.

Gundam Build Real follows Hiro Suzuki and his friends who had dreamed of competing at the national level of "Gundam Model Battle" in elementary school. However, their team failed to reach the competition. Now in high school, Hiro reunites with his old friends, and together they reform their team, "Bright."

Mobile Suit Gundam: Cucuruz Doan's Island

One of the latest films in the Gundam series is Mobile Suit Gundam: Cucuruz Doan's Island. Cucuruz Doan's Island is adapted from an infamous episode of Mobile Suit Gundam that suffered from numerous animation issues and Yoshikazu Yasuhiko's hospitalization. Yasuhiko wanted to make Cucuruz Doan's Island because he felt the episode's plot points deserved a second chance.

Cucuruz Doan's Island is set during the One Year War, with Amuro Ray and White Base receiving orders to fight off Zeon forces on a mysterious island labeled the "Island of No Return." The idea of revisiting the events of the original Gundam anime was theoretically first envisioned through the Mobile Suit Gundam movie trilogy, which were compilations that excised narrative fat from the series.

Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch From Mercury

The newest Gundam franchise series is the Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury anime series, which started in 2022. The Witch from Mercury made its debut in Japan in October 2022 and follows the story of Suletta Mercury, the first female main protagonist in a Gundam television series. This was one of the elements that allowed it to reach a new, wider audience.

Suletta joined the piloting department of the Asticassia School of Technology after transferring there from the human colony on Mercury. Witch from Mercury, sometimes referred to by fans as "G-Witch," starts as a seemingly light and fun boarding school tale before delivering an absolute gut punch at the end of its first season. Like Iron-Blooded Orphans before it, G-Witch is a great jumping-on point for new fans as it takes place in an entirely new continuity. It's also one of the best Gundam anime series, meaning newcomers will see the best the series has to offer.

Gundam Build Metaverse

In honor of Gundam Build's 10th anniversary, Bandai has greenlit a new ONA entitled Gundam Build Metaverse. An evolution of the previous Gundam Build series, it takes place after a new internet known as the Metaverse is created. The lead protagonist is Rio Hojo, who's spent years mastering Gunpla building and fighting techniques from masters both in real life and in the Metaverse.

After creating his own Gundam, Rio decides to head into the Metaverse to challenge some Gunpla Battle champions. Metaverse seems to be aiming to bring back some classic Gundam Build characters to tap into the nostalgia for fans who grew up watching.

Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom

The latest cinematic entry in the Gundam franchise is Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom. Releasing over two decades after the original Mobile Suit Gundam SEED, it continues the story of the Cosmic Era timeline following the events of Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny. It's also just one of several entries in the concerted return to continuity.

The movie, as its name suggests, explores concepts of freedom and destiny. This comes after various invasion attempts by the group Blue Cosmos. SEED Freedom brings back several classic characters, including Kira Yamato and Lacus Clyne. It's also gone on to become the latest Gundam anime success, with the franchise's long-awaited new movie being even bigger at the Japanese box office than Hathaway.

Mobile Suit Gundam

Mobile Suit Gundam follows Amuro Ray as he learns to pilot an experimental mobile suit called the Gundam. After his home is destroyed in an attack by the Principality of Zeon. Amuro joins the crew of the White Base carrier as they attempt to regroup with the Earth Federation. The show is as much a Saturday morning cartoon as it is a somber meditation on the cost of war and the arbitrary lines it drives between humanity. MSG set the stage for the rest of the entire Gundam franchise, which spans more than 40 years of TV shows, manga, movies, and video games.
